2002 Player of the Year

                      How She Got Started

Many people have believed that Ashley Albrecht must have been born with skates.  This "belief" is supported by a Albrecht home movie that shows Ashley as a 2-year-old in a pink snowsuit on skates on a South St. Paul pond.

Her mother, Judy, remembers the first skating lessons, when Ashley, at 2 1/2, was the youngest one present.  "Beginning figure skating lessons.  Everyone else was using a walker, but she refused.  She could skate right away.  She could glide."

As a seventh-grader, Ashley was good enough to play for the South St. Paul girls varsity.  But her parents were concerned about mixing her with girls as much as five years older.  So she joined the 15-and-under team in South St. Paul that won the first girls state Pee-Wee title.

Packers assistant coach Pete Edlund recalled the decision to move Ashley to defense, "We though she could be our Bobby Orr.  She got the puck put of our end all the time and created so much offense for us.  She really exceeded our expectations."

In 8th grade, Ashley was Honorable Mention All-State as a forward.

South St.Paul just had won its first state hockey title, and already Packer fans wanted more.

As Ashley skated off the ice the crowd began chanting,
"Ms Hockey, Ms Hockey, . . .", in reference to the award given the top senior player in the state.

Maybe the fans seemed a little greedy at the time.  As it turned out, they were merely prophetic.  Ashley added the Ms.Hockey award in a presentation the following evening.

                      St.Paul Pioneer Press,  Feb 25, 2002
"She could have scored much more than she did this year, but she sacrificed points --- to get something done."

After the Packer brought home the school's first state hockey title:  "You have to have a great one to win a state championship."
