How She Got Started

"I grew up playing with the boys, and when my brother started playing, I joined in," Holly said.  "They were pretty tough on me.  But I've been playing boys hockey my whole life.  The guys' game is so fast-paced, and if you don't keep your head up, you get leveled.  But I've had my share of hits, too."  In the 2000-01 season, she was assistant captain on the boys St. Cloud Pee Wee A team.

She joined the St. Cloud Tech girls' varsity as an 8th grader.  Her skills and talent were evident immediately.  She had the attitude of an old-fashioned "rink rat".  At the end of the season, the St. Cloud Times voted her Girls' Hockey Player of the Year.

At St. Cloud Tech, she scored 115 points in two years.  She was chosen St. Cloud Times girls hockey Player of the Year, twice.  But she didn't get the sense she was improving as much as she liked.  Holly wanted to take her game to new levels, and figured Warroad would be the place to do it.

"Up here [in hockey tradition-rich Warroad], it's all about hockey and I wanted to get better.  Playing for Tech, It didn't seem like I was going anywhere."

[In Warroad:]  "Everyone is all about hockey here.  In St. Cloud, some players didn't play because they loved it.  It was just the thing to do.  Here, everyone puts their heart into it."
