How She Got Started

Jessica has been taught by a familiar Farmington figure.  "My father is a long time varsity coach in Farmington and he’s the goalie coach and we call him the Doc,” said [Coach Jon] Holmes.  “We let him work with her.  I just step back and let her do her thing."

Farmington, the heavy underdog, had just beaten Eagan 1-0 in the Class 2A tournament quarterfinals thanks to 13-year-old  Jessica, an 8th grader, who handled all 35 shots she faced.   Farmington managed only eight shots.   "She's stoic," Farmington coach Jon Holmes said.   "Nothing fazes her."

"We call it the “Erch-Factor,” because you have an 8th grader and it’s almost like having a solid senior because she doesn’t know.  She’s out there like it’s any other game and she stood on her head and played wonderful.”

Former Gophers standout Natalie Darwitz, in her first season as her father's assistant, said she couldn't help but notice the irony in the way the game turned out.   "We were the ones

who were supposed to have the goalie of the year," she said of All-Metro senior Alyssa Grogan.   Give Erchul performance of the year.
"Since January 3, she's been playing like that," coach Jon Holmes said.   "She's now 13-1 [10-2], I think, since she kind of took over. She's really been solid.   She's got a 1.56 [1.60] goals against, which probably goes down after this game, and that includes a 10-goal loss to Holy Angels."

Jessica started the year off playing full time JV in 2007-2008.  I knew she was going to be a great goalie just by watching her fundamentals and outstanding reflexes in practices and games.  I did not imagine however that she would have become such a great goalie in such a short amount of time.  Jessica played the final two months of the 2007-2008 season for the varsity that included the playoffs and state tournament.  She competed with the composure of a seasoned senior goaltender.  I will expect nothing less than some outstanding performances from Jessica over the next four years!
