2007 Player of the Year

How She Got Started

Katherine Chute's skill on skates should come as no surprise. The family tree of the Blake girls' hockey star contains a long line of relatives comfortable on the ice.

Katharine's father, Dr. Edmond Chute, played for Blake back in the “brown and white” era, the time when The Blake School was Blake School for Boy’s.  Edmond was a defenseman.  In his junior year, their record was 23-3-3, and they won the MISL (Minnesota Independent School League) Championship.

Katharine started their career as a 3rd-grader when she was selected to play on the Girls U12B team in the Wayzata youth hockey system.  She earned the center position  She then played U12A in Wayzata for the next three years, . After a year of U15 in Wayzata, she made the Blake School varsity squad in October 2002.

                        A Final Tribute

Katharine has a waterbug-like skating ability.

She has always had elite talent, but she became even better in her final season once she figured out how to take advantage of her scoring opportunities while at the same time maintaining an unselfish approach that made her into a leader.

"Katharine is soft-spoken and the quiet leader of this Blake team. The example she sets in practice first, and then in games is inspirational to her teammates as well as the coaching staff. Someone of her character, will, and work ethic comes along rarely. She is congenial in victory and coaches from other teams hold her in the highest regards, as she is polite and respectful as an opponent, but yet a competitor of the highest quality in a game."

Blake head coach Brano Stankovsky

"The top five [Ms Hockey] finalists – who in my humble opinion are Chute – blake,
Cody – Roseville – Stoa – EP, then it gets a little fuzzy . . .
Chute from Blake is in my mind the fastest kid in the state this year, if you haven’t seen her yet, I recommend it she is fun to watch."

                    . . . Why didn't I see her coming ?

John of MNPuck Asks:

I really wasn’t aware of Katharine.
2005 Pioneer Press All-State Team - - - No mention of Katharine.
2006 Pioneer Press All-State Team - - - Katharine made Honorable Mention.

I didn’t see her coming.   Why?

Class AA Coach Responds:
I’m going to try to tip toe around this one because I don’t want to take anything away from Katherine, because she is a very good player.  Chute was the fastest player in the state last year
['07], and I think the reason she won Ms. Hockey is because she was the most complete player (by that I mean was the best defensive player who also had an offensive game).  I was able to see her compete against her classmates, and she was in my opinion the best kid in the class of ‘07, with that said this is probably our weakest class in the past few years.  I don’t mean that to take away from her award, but this class ['07] just had less blue chip talent than any class I had seen in a few years.  I would go so far to say that any of the top 5 Ms. Hockey finalist [of '07] would have a difficult time making the top 10 of next years class ['08], which in my opinion might be our best class ever.  In fact I would take kids 10-15 in next years class ['08] over last years 1-5.  I think that is why she may not of shown up in those All-State teams, as there are players who are better than her in the class ahead and behind her, but she was clearly the cream of the crop of ‘07, and a very fast player, she was good in every zone, and on top of it a wonderful teammate/person.
