Kayla Hagen faced a dilemma in the summer of 2000.
She was entering eighth grade and hoped to
play varsity hockey, but Pequot Lakes (Minn.) High
School had no girls team. So
Hagen and her family looked to the east, toward Hibbing.
They were familiar with the
Hibbing-Chisholm High School girls team after Kayla
played that summer in Hibbing's Community Olympic
Development Program. The
Hagens decided to buy a small house in Hibbing, and
Kayla began eighth grade there.
"If I stayed (in Pequot Lakes), I'd probably still be
playing against the guys," Kayla said. [So
"playing against the guys" is how she got started.]
