How She Got Started

"I started skating when I was 2.  We used to have a rink in back of our house.  I played hockey with my older brother, Andy, starting with a Mites team when I was 5."
At ages 12 and 13, she played on a high-school-aged team from St. Paul that played other high schools that had club teams.

Her High School Stats

Kelly Kegley, a 4-foot-10, 83-pounder whose No.7 jersey hangs down near her knees when she skates, was the irresistible "tournament darling" of the first girls high school hockey tournament.

This feisty eighth-grader is more than a novelty.  She centers the second line for South St. Paul and leads the Packers with 50 points (28 G, 22 A).

On the ice, she slips around and between opponents with a deceptive change of pace, cutting back against the flow of defenders with instincts reminiscent of a miniature Neal Broten.

Kelly Kegley Scores Historic Goal   November 21, 1994

Kelly scored the first goal in the first girls varsity hockey game.  That game kicked off the inaugural season in which there will be a state tournament for the 24 teams in Minnesota.  It's the only state in the nation to sanction the sport for girls.

A Final Tribute

1997 All-State

1999 * Second Team All-State
Krissy Wendell, D/F;  Natalie Darwitz, F;  Ronda Curtin, F/D;  and Renee Curtin, F/D  were (and still are) the four best players in Minnesota High School Girls Hockey history.   These four forwards were on the 1999 All-State first team.   This relegated Kelly Kegley, a forward, to the second team.

She hadn't missed a game in her five seasons on the South St. Paul varsity

She was South St. Paul's leading scorer the first five seasons.

Member of the Girls All-Time Top Players listing because of  "Leading Pioneer, in Minnesota high school girls hockey, with outstanding stats" and twice "All-State".
