 How She Got Started

Larry Wendell couldn't postpone his daughter's wishes much longer. She was getting persistent.. ``Please, Dad,'' Krissy begged. ``Please let me play hockey like Erik.'' Krissy was 3 years old yet she wanted to be like her 5-year-old brother who went out with dad to play hockey each night..  Finally, Larry Wendell caved in.   Just like Erik, Krissy could play hockey once she reached age 5.

"Not a day went by that she didn't remind me," Larry Wendell said.  The updates came at breakfast, at dinner, before bedtime, during a lull in a conversation.  Krissy would play hockey when she turned five.

Krissy and Erik taught each other how to play.  They went out every night.  They sought out skating venues anywhere, hoping to run into other children with whom to play.

She played on boys hockey teams until her junior year in high school.

Erik Wendell went on to earn Second Team All-State at Maple Grove in 1997-98.  And then went to play for the U of MN Gophers.
1994:  Krissy was a member of the Maple Grove Little League Team that went all the way to the Little League World Series in Williamport, PA.  She was the catcher.   Could she throw out base-runners trying to steal.  Don't know.  No boy was willing to challenge her strong arm, and suffer the indignity of being thrown-out by a girl.

1994-95:   In Pee Wees, Krissy was bigger and stronger than most boys.  She would barrel down the ice, skate through interference, and put the puck in the net.

1995-96:
Brooklyn Park (boys) Bantam A Team

1996-97:  One of the leading scorer on Brooklyn Park (boys) Bantam A Team that finished third in the state tournament.

1997-98:   Member of the Park Center boys hockey team.

1998:
Wendell attributes her success to playing in the boys' programs for the past 12 years

A Final Tribute

Thanks to Wendell, the hockey phrase "dumping the puck" disappeared from the vernacular of her coach, Park Center's John Donovan.

Although this was his first season [1998-99] coaching Wendell, Donovan became so accustomed to her controlling the puck that, unconsciously, he would change lines while Wendell waged a one-on-five keep-away contest.

"That's how good she is," Donovan said.   "I didn't even realize I was doing it until one game -- I checked the tape -- I did it eight times in the second period against Mounds View.   Between periods she was saying, 'I feel like I'm out there all by myself.' "
